The Los Angeles Clippers today re-signed free agent point guard Sam Cassell. Per team policy, terms of the deal were not released. InsideHoops.com hears it was a two-year deal for $13 million.

Cassell averaged 17.2 points and 6.3 assists in 78 games last season in leading the Clippers to their best record in 31 seasons and to within one game of the Western Conference Finals. During the Clippers’ 12 game playoff run, Cassell was second on the team in scoring (18.0 ppg), while averaged 5.8 assists and 4.0 rebounds per game.

“Sam was an integral part of our success last season,” stated Vice President of Basketball Operations Elgin Baylor. “We are very happy that he will be with us for the next two years.”

The Clippers acquired Cassell and a future first round pick from the Minnesota Timberwolves on August 12, 2005 in exchange for guards Marko Jaric and Lionel Chalmers.

“It is a great feeling to have Sam back under contract,” said Clippers Head Coach Mike Dunleavy. “He was such a vital part to our maturation and success last year. We are very confident he will continue to provide the leadership needed to progress to our ultimate goal of winning an NBA championship.”

In 13 NBA seasons, Cassell has tallied 16.3 points and 6.2 assists in 880 career games with Houston, Phoenix, Dallas, New Jersey, Milwaukee, Minnesota and the Clippers. A two-time NBA champion with the Houston Rockets, Cassell has played in 115 postseason games and was named an All-Star in 2004.

Cassell has tallied 14,305 points and 5,455 assists in his impressive career and is a career 85.9% free throw shooter.
