Deron Williams Olympics interviewOn the morning of August 12, the second day of Olympic basketball competition, Team USA beat Angola 97-76. Here's what USA guard Deron Williams said after the game:

Question: Talk about not playing as much full court pressure defense in the NBA.

Deron Williams: When you play two games back to back, and to pick up the pressure full court for 40 minutes, as many minutes as the guys that this team play, you wouldn’t last half a season.

Question: You’re able to do that here though.

Deron Williams: Oh yeah. That’s our objective. To keep people fresh, always keep the pressure up. Players get tired and know you’re coming out.

Question: How hard is it to adjust to the number of intentional fouls that are called in international ball than the NBA?

Deron Williams: We only had a couple. But it’s just different. If you reach out and grab somebody you know it’s going to be an intentional foul no matter what. It’s a clear path foul in the NBA, here it’s a technical. So it’s a little different.

Question: What are you doing off the court to make the most of your Olympic experience?

Deron Williams: I’ve been to the village. Just hanging out, playing cards. I went and saw swimming last night. I know some of the guys went and saw tennis. They didn’t have a ticket for me so they left me. Some people have seen boxing. Guys have been going to see different events.

Question: Talk about Greece, the USA’s next opponent.

Deron Williams: It’ll definitely be a tough test, a team we have circled coming into this tournament because of the way things played out in ’06 in the (FIBA) World Championship. We’re looking forward to this game. It’ll be our first real tough test. It’s a team that poses a lot of problems with us with the pick and roll and down low with a real dominant post player.

Question: Will the USA's shooting come around?

Deron Williams: Yes, it will come. We have to relax and knock down shots. We are a little anxious, and we are relying a little too much on our fast break game, but the shots will come and they will fall.

Question: Was it difficult with such a quiet crowd?

Deron Williams: We had to make our own energy tonight. It wasn't coming from the crowd, a lot of empty seats. But it was still a fun game to be a part of.

Question: Are you worried about the shooting?

Deron Williams: Not really. When is Kobe Bryant going to go 0-for-5 again? It's not going to happen too many times. We'll start knocking down shots. We can't worry about missing them, we just have to keep shooting them. We are getting great looks, we just haven't knocked them down. Once they start falling, we will be tough to defend.

Question: Are you excited to play Greece?

Deron Williams: We have had the Greece game circled for a while with how things ended in 2006. I wasn't on that team, but a lot of our guys were, and they have talked about Greece being a tough team, and it's a game they remember. We are excited to come out and show the world how good we really are.
