The Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame Names Five for Class of 2005. Coaching legends Brown, Boeheim , Calhoun, Gunter and International Star Marcari Comprise Elite Group Elected

SPRINGFIELD, MA, April 4, 2005 – Jim Calhoun , coach of 2004 NCAA Champion University of Connecticut, Syracuse coach Jim Boeheim , who led his team to the 2003 Championship, longtime coach and broadcaster Hubie Brown , Sue Gunter , who collected over 700 wins and Brazilian superstar Hortencia Marcari were named to the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame Class of 2005 today. The announcement was made in St. Louis , MO , site of the 2005 NCAA Men's Final Four. Enshrinement Ceremonies for the Class of 2005 will take place September 8-10 in Springfield , MA.

Boeheim and Calhoun each recorded their 700th career win this season, and became the first coaches with exactly 700 wins to play each other when they met in a Big East matchup on March 5. In addition to over 1,400 wins, the legendary Big East coaches represent three NCAA Championships (Calhoun 1999, 2004 and Boeheim 2003), 5 Final Four appearances ( Boeheim 3, Calhoun 2), 17 Big East regular season titles (Calhoun 9, Boeheim 8), ten Big East Tournament championships (Calhoun 6, Boeheim 4), and seven Big East Coach of the Year awards (Calhoun 4, Boeheim 3). At the conclusion of the 2004-05 season , Boeheim and Calhoun were tied for 6 th most wins by an active Division I coach with 703 apiece.

Gunter amassed 708 wins as a collegiate coach, third all-time in NCAA women's basketball history. Her LSU squad went to the Final Four in her last season before she stepped down as head coach in 2004, and the 2004-2005 Tigers Gunter helped mold will play in the Final Four for the second straight year.

Brown was elected under the category of Contributor for his impact on the game of basketball as a coach, clinician, broadcaster and ambassador. His latest coaching efforts with the Memphis Grizzlies were rewarded with the 2004 NBA Coach of the Year award to match the one he claimed in 1978 with Atlanta.

Marcari , known worldwide as simply ‘ Hortencia ', dominated international women's basketball while playing for her native Brazil , leading her squad to the 1994 World Championship.
