jeff mcinnisThe New Jersey Nets have acquired guard/forward Bernard Robinson from the Charlotte Bobcats in exchange for guard Jeff McInnis and cash considerations, Nets President Rod Thorn announced today.

Jeff Lenchiner, editor of InsideHoops.com, says that this deal was expected. The Nets and Bobcats had been talking about McInnis for a while.

“Bernard can play both guard and forward, is a good defender and will add athleticism and depth off our bench,” said Thorn.

Currently in his third NBA season out of Michigan, Robinson (6’6”/210) was a second round selection (45th overall) of the Charlotte Bobcats in the 2004 NBA Draft. In 118 career games, Robinson has averaged 4.8 ppg and 2.9 rpg in 15.9 mpg. This season, Robinson has appeared in 21 games for the Bobcats, averaging 2.4 ppg and 2.0 rpg.

McInnis will wear jersey #0 and be in uniform when the Bobcats travel to Orlando on Friday.

The 6-4, 190-pound Charlotte native has appeared in 484 career NBA games (305 starts) and averaged 10.3 points, 4.5 assists, 2.1 rebounds, 1.4 steals and 28.5 minutes, while shooting .432 from the field, .334 from three-point range and .801 from the free throw line. His nine-year NBA career has included stints with Denver, Washington, L.A. Clippers, Portland, Cleveland and New Jersey.

“We are familiar with what Jeff brings to the table with his athleticism, work ethic and court savvy,” Bobcats General Manager & Head Coach Bernie Bickerstaff said. “Having drafted Jeff and coached him in the past, he will be able to step in and provide the depth we need at the point guard position.”

Initially drafted by Denver in the second round (37th overall pick) of the 1996 NBA Draft, McInnis left the University of North Carolina after his junior season. He appeared in only 13 games for the Nuggets before spending the remainder of the 1996-97 season in Greece. He also had two separate stints in the Continental Basketball Association (CBA) with the Quad City Thunder in 1997-98 and 1999-00.
