2019 NBA DRAFT LOTTERY RESULTS
May 14, 2019

The New Orleans Pelicans won the 2019 NBA Draft Lottery in Chicago today and will have the first overall pick in the 2019 NBA Draft, which will be held on Thursday, June 20 at 7 p.m. ET at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, N.Y.

Below are the results from NBA Draft Lottery 2019:

1. New Orleans
2. Memphis
3. New York
4. Los Angeles Lakers
5. Cleveland
6. Phoenix
7. Chicago
8. Atlanta
9. Washington
10. Atlanta (from Dallas)
11. Minnesota
12. Charlotte
13. Miami
14. Boston (from Sacramento via Philadelphia)

USA Today: "The New Orleans Pelicans were fortunate to turn up the franchise-changing ping pong ball to win the No. 1 pick at Tuesday night s NBA draft lottery, despite entering the day with just a 6% chance of winning. They beat out 13 other hopeful teams looking to draft Williamson, the Duke sensation who s the presumptive top pick in June after a highlight-reel freshman season in which he was college basketball s national player of the year."

USA Today: "Previously, the team with the worst record (New York went a league-worst 17-65 this past season) had a 25% chance of getting the top pick. This year the team with the three worst records the Knicks, Cleveland Cavaliers (fifth) and Phoenix Suns (sixth) all had an equal 14% chance at the top pick. But the new system benefited teams near the middle more allowing the Pelicans, Grizzlies and Los Angeles Lakers to move up."

LA Times: "If the Lakers play it right, they can package this fourth pick with some of their kids for a veteran star who could play alongside LeBron James and help attract a free-agent superstar who could instantly turn them back into championship contenders. If the Lakers play it wrong, they will be stuck with the fourth-best player in a three-player draft. They will have a nice prospect, but they re not in the market for nice prospect. They can throw a draft party, but the hugs will be forced and the champagne will remained iced."

2019 NBA DRAFT LOTTERY PREVIEW

The 2019 NBA Draft Lottery will be held in Chicago on Tuesday, May 14. ESPN will air the results live at 8:30 p.m. ET.

The 35th annual NBA Draft Lottery will determine the order of selection for the first 14 picks of the 2019 NBA Draft. Drawings will be conducted to determine the first four picks in the NBA Draft. The remainder of the lottery teams will select in positions five through 14 in inverse order of their 2018-19 regular-season records. The actual lottery procedure will take place in a separate room just before ESPN s national broadcast. Select media members, NBA officials and representatives of the participating teams and the accounting firm of Ernst & Young will be in attendance for the drawings.

Fourteen ping-pong balls numbered 1 through 14 will be placed in a lottery machine. There are 1,001 possible combinations when four balls are drawn out of 14, without regard to their order of selection. Before the lottery, 1,000 of those 1,001 combinations will be assigned to the 14 participating lottery teams.

The lottery machine is manufactured by the Smart Play Company, a leading manufacturer of state lottery machines throughout the United States. Smart Play also weighs, measures and certifies the ping-pong balls before the drawing.

The drawing process occurs in the following manner: All 14 balls are placed in the lottery machine and they are mixed for 20 seconds, and then the first ball is removed. The remaining balls are mixed in the lottery machine for another 10 seconds, and then the second ball is drawn. There is a 10-second mix, and then the third ball is drawn. There is a 10-second mix, and then the fourth ball is drawn. The team that has been assigned that combination will receive the No. 1 pick. The same process is repeated with the same ping-pong balls and lottery machine for the second through fourth picks.

If the same team comes up more than once, the result is discarded and another four-ball combination is selected. Also, if the one unassigned combination is drawn, the result is discarded and the balls are drawn again.

The length of time the balls are mixed is monitored by a timekeeper who faces away from the machine and signals the machine operator after the appropriate amount of time has elapsed.

Darrington Hobson, a partner in the accounting firm of Ernst & Young, oversees the entire lottery process and stuffs and seals the envelopes before bringing them to the studio for the broadcast. The announcement of the lottery results will be made by NBA Deputy Commissioner Mark Tatum. A second representative from each participating team will be seated on stage. Neither the Deputy Commissioner nor the team representatives on stage will be informed of the lottery results before the envelopes are opened.

The team whose logo is in the last envelope opened will have the No. 1 pick in the 2019 NBA Draft, to be held on Thursday, June 20 at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, N.Y.

2018 NBA DRAFT LOTTERY

The 2018 NBA Draft Lottery took place May 15 in Chicago. This is what determines the order of lottery pick selection for the 2018 NBA Draft. NBA teams that fail to make the playoffs are called "lottery teams." The first 14 picks in the Draft are called "lottery picks." Further explanation is below.

2018 NBA DRAFT LOTTERY RESULTS

For the first time in franchise history, the Phoenix Suns were awarded the first overall pick in the NBA Draft, winning the 2018 NBA Draft Lottery held tonight in Chicago. The Suns had a 25.0 percent probability of winning the No. 1 pick in the 2018 NBA Draft, highest of any team participating in the Lottery.

This is a historic night for the Phoenix Suns, said General Manager Ryan McDonough. Those of us in the room in Chicago felt the tension, then it was an unbelievable feeling to see it revealed that we received the No. 1 selection. In the illustrious history of the franchise, we ve never had the first overall pick and to bring it home in such a loaded draft at an important point in time for our franchise, it s incredible.

The Suns, who will draft for the 51st time this year, have never before drafted higher than second overall, most recently selecting Armen Gilliam with the second pick of the 1987 NBA Draft. The Suns also used the second overall pick to select Neal Walk in 1969, given the No. 2 pick on March 19, 1969, after losing a coin flip with Milwaukee to determine which team received the No. 1 pick and, eventually, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar.

By hitting on their 25.0 percent chance to win the top pick, this is the fourth consecutive Lottery in which the team with the highest probability of winning the No. 1 pick won it. Prior to this now four-year run, the team with the best odds of winning the first pick hadn t done so in 10 straight Lotteries from 2005-2014.

The 2018 NBA Draft will be held on Thursday, June 21, at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, and televised on ESPN at 7 p.m. ET.

The 2018 NBA Draft Lottery results are below:

1. Phoenix
2. Sacramento
3. Atlanta
4. Memphis
5. Dallas
6. Orlando
7. Chicago
8. Cleveland (from Brooklyn via Boston)
9. New York
10. Philadelphia (from Los Angeles Lakers via Phoenix)
11. Charlotte
12. LA Clippers (from Detroit)
13. LA Clippers
14. Denver

The Suns own four overall selections in the 2018 NBA Draft, including two of the top 16 and three of the top 31. In addition to the No. 1 overall pick, the Suns possess the No. 16 (via Miami), No. 31 and No. 59 (via Toronto) selections.

The Dallas Mavericks Assistant Vice President of Basketball Operations Michael Finley issued the following statement at tonight s NBA Draft Lottery: Ultimately, when you are in this position you would love to have the first pick, but we still have a top-five pick with a chance to get a very good player. It is a deep draft with some great young talent and we can still get a player who can come in and help us out immediately. There is a wide variety of talent at the top of this draft and we are hopeful that we can get a guy who will help us not be in this lottery next year. The Mavericks now own the fifth overall selection in the first round of the 2018 NBA Draft.

Sacramento Kings General Manager Vlade Divac issued the following statement: "We couldn t be more thrilled to secure the second selection in this deep and talented draft class. We are well positioned moving ahead and look forward to continuing to develop and improve our team.

Probability suggested this is where we would end up tonight, both keeping the pick and selecting at No. 10. Given the depth of the draft pool, we expect to be in a position to add another talented young piece to our developing core, Philadelphia 76ers President of Basketball Operations Bryan Colangelo said.

2018 NBA DRAFT LOTTERY PREVIEW

On April 13, 2018, five ties among teams that finished the 2017-18 NBA regular season with identical records were broken through random drawings to determine the order of selection for the 2018 NBA Draft 2018.

- San Antonio (47-35) won a tiebreaker with Minnesota.
- Oklahoma City (48-34) won a tiebreaker with Indiana, New Orleans and Utah. Second, third and fourth place in the tiebreaker drawings went to Utah, New Orleans and Indiana, respectively.

The Boston Celtics tonight won the NBA Draft Lottery 2017, which was conducted at the New York Hilton Midtown.

Boston will have the first overall pick in the NBA Draft 2017, which will be held on Thursday, June 22 (7 p.m. ET) at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, N.Y.

In case you're wondering why the Celtics had a lottery pick, it was via trade years ago via the Nets. The Celtics had the option to swap picks, and of course since the Nets had a miserable record this season, Boston did elect to do just that.

The following are the results from the 2017 NBA Draft Lottery:

1) Boston (from Brooklyn)
2) L.A. Lakers
3) Philadelphia (from Sacramento)
4) Phoenix
5) Sacramento (from Philadelphia)
6) Orlando
7) Minnesota
8) New York
9) Dallas
10) Sacramento (from New Orleans)
11) Charlotte
12) Detroit
13) Denver
14) Miami

2017 NBA DRAFT LOTTERY PREVIEW

nba draft lottery The 2017 NBA Draft Lottery, where ping-pong balls supplant basketballs as the tools of determining supremacy, will be held on Tuesday, May 16 and will be shown on ESPN beginning approximately 8:30 EDT.

The 33rd annual NBA Draft Lottery will determine the order of selection for the first 14 picks of the 2017 NBA Draft.

The actual Lottery procedure will take place in a separate room just prior to the national broadcast on ESPN. Select media members, NBA officials and representatives of the participating teams and the accounting firm of Ernst & Young will be in attendance for the drawing.

Fourteen ping-pong balls numbered 1 through 14 will be placed in a lottery machine. There are 1,001 possible combinations when four balls are drawn out of 14, without regard to their order of selection. Prior to the lottery, 1,000 of those 1,001 combinations will be assigned to the 14 participating lottery teams.

The lottery machine is manufactured by the Smart Play Company, a leading manufacturer of state lottery machines throughout the United States. Smart Play also weighs, measures and certifies the ping-pong balls prior to the drawing.

The drawing process occurs in the following manner: All 14 balls are placed in the lottery machine and they are mixed for 20 seconds; then the first ball is removed. The remaining balls are mixed in the lottery machine for another 10 seconds, and then second ball is drawn. There is a 10-second mix, and then the third ball is drawn. There is a 10-second mix, and then the fourth ball is drawn. The team that has been assigned that combination will receive the number one pick. The same process is repeated with the same ping-pong balls and lottery machine for the second pick and then again for the third pick.

If the same team comes up more than once, the result is discarded and another 4-ball combination is selected. Also, if the one unassigned combination is drawn, the result is discarded and the balls are drawn again.

The length of time the balls are mixed is monitored by a timekeeper who faces away from the machine and signals the machine operator after the appropriate amount of time has elapsed.

The Brooklyn Nets finished the season with the NBA s worst record (20-62) and Boston received Brooklyn s pick via trade, so the Celtics will be assigned the first 250 combinations. The Miami Heat, the best team in the lottery at 41-41, will have only five combinations out of 1,000.

The order of selection for the teams that do not win one of the top three picks will be determined by inverse order of their regular-season record. Thus, Boston can pick no lower than fourth and Phoenix (24-58) no lower than fifth.

Denise Pelli, a partner in the accounting firm of Ernst & Young, overseas the entire lottery process and stuffs and seals the envelopes prior to bringing them to the studio for the broadcast. The announcement of the Lottery results will be made by NBA Deputy Commissioner Mark Tatum. A second representative from each participating team will be seated on stage. Neither the Deputy Commissioner nor the team representatives on stage will be informed of the Lottery results prior to the opening of the envelopes.

The team whose logo is in the last envelope opened will pick first in the 2017 NBA Draft, to be held on Thursday, June 22 at Barclays Center.

2016 NBA DRAFT LOTTERY RESULTS

The following are the results from the 2016 NBA Draft Lottery, which took place tonight at the New York Hilton Midtown:

The Philadelphia 76ers will have the first overall pick in the 2016 NBA Draft, which will be held in Brooklyn at Barclays Center on Thursday, June 23. The draft will air live on ESPN and ESPN Radio at 7 p.m. ET.

According to the Orange County Register, "First, 14 pingpong balls numbered were individually placed in a machine manufactured by Smart Play Company, which the NBA said weighed, measured and certified the pingpong balls. Kyle Yelencsics, an associate coordinator with the NBA, then clicked a stopwatch before raising his left arm to signal for the machine to stop after 20 seconds passed. During this process, Yelencsics faced away from the machine on the other side of the room. Lou DiSabatino, the NBA s vice president of events and attractions, then followed Yelencsics silent orders and pulled a small lever to release one of the balls through a vertical tube. Kiki Vandeweghe, the NBA s senior vice president of basketball operations, then took the ball and read it aloud. Unlike the proceedings that were announced at halftime of the Cavaliers-Raptors playoff game, the real draft order was determined in ascending order. So the Sixers first learned they landed the No. 1 pick, which had a 25 percent chance of happening."

2015 NBA DRAFT LOTTERY PREVIEW

The 2015 NBA Draft Lottery, where ping-pong balls supplant basketballs as the tools of determining supremacy, will be held at the New York Hilton Midtown on Tuesday, May 19 and will be televised on ESPN at approximately 8:30 p.m. EDT.

The 31st annual NBA Draft Lottery will determine the order of selection for the first 14 picks of the 2015 NBA Draft.

The actual Lottery procedure will take place in a separate room just prior to the national broadcast on ESPN.

Also, if the one unassigned combination is drawn, the balls are drawn to the top again.

The length of time the balls are mixed is monitored by a timekeeper who faces away from the machine and signals the machine operator after the appropriate amount of time has elapsed.

The Minnesota Timberwolves finished the season with the NBA s worst record (16-66), so they will be assigned the first 250 combinations. The Oklahoma City Thunder, the best team in the lottery at 45-37, will have only five combinations out of 1,000.

The order of selection for the teams that do not win one of the top three picks will be determined by inverse order of their regular-season record. Thus, Minnesota can pick no lower than fourth, New York (17-65) no lower than fifth and Philadelphia (18-64) no lower than sixth.

The team whose logo is in the last envelope opened will pick first in the 2015 NBA Draft, to be held on Thursday, June 25 at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.

History of NBA Draft Lottery's Development
May 18, 2015

The NBA Board of Governors, meeting in Salt Lake City in June of 1984, voted to adopt a lottery system among the nonplayoff teams to determine their order of selection in the first round of the NBA Draft beginning in 1985.

From 1966 through 1984, the teams that finished with the worst records in each conference participated in a coin flip to determine which team would draft first. The remaining teams picked in inverse order of their wonlost records. Under the system adopted prior to the 1985 NBA Draft, the NBA Lottery determines the order of selection for the nonplayoff teams (or the teams holding their picks through trades) for the first round only. Teams pick in inverse order of their records in the second round (or, prior to the draft being reduced to two rounds in 1989, in all succeeding rounds).

Under a procedural change adopted by the Board of Governors in April of 1986, the Lottery determines the order of selection for the first three teams only. The remaining nonplayoff teams select in inverse order of their regular season records. Therefore, the team with the worst record in the league is assured of picking no worse than fourth, the team with the secondworst record no worse than fifth and so on.

In a further refinement in October of 1989, the Board of Governors adopted a weighted system beginning with the 1990 NBA Draft Lottery, which included 11 teams due to expansion. The team with the worst record during the regular season received 11 chances at the top pick (out of a total of 66), the secondworst team got 10 chances and the team with the best record among the nonplayoff clubs got one chance.

The Board of Governors approved a modification of the Lottery system in November of 1993 that, effective with the 1994 NBA Draft Lottery, increased the chances of the teams with the worst records in the league winning one of the top three picks in the draft while decreasing the lottery chances of the teams with the best records. The new system increased the chances of the team with the worst record drawing the first pick in the draft from 16.7 percent to 25 percent, while decreasing the chances of the team with the best record among lottery teams from 1.5 percent to 0.5 percent.

Under the system, 14 pingpong balls numbered 1 through 14 are placed in a drum. There are 1,001 possible combinations when four balls are drawn out of 14, without regard to their order of selection. Prior to the Lottery, 1,000 combinations are assigned to the Lottery teams based on their order of finish during the regular season. Four balls are drawn to the top to determine a four- digit combination. The team that has been assigned that combination will receive the number one pick. The four balls are placed back in the drum and the process is repeated to determine the number two and three picks. (Note: If the one unassigned combination is drawn, the balls are drawn to the top again.)

In October of 1995, the Board of Governors increased the number of teams participating in the Lottery from 11 to 13 to account for the addition of expansion teams Toronto and Vancouver. Starting in 1996, the team with the worst record in the Lottery continued to have a 25% chance of winning the first pick, teams two through six have slightly fewer chances, team seven has the same number of chances and teams eight through 12 have slightly more chances. The number of chances for team 13 did not change.

The 2004 NBA Draft Lottery increased to 14 teams with the addition of the Charlotte Bobcats. The Bobcats, as part of their expansion agreement were locked into the fourth position in the 2004 Draft and therefore did not have a chance to receive other picks in the Lottery. The 2015 NBA Draft Lottery decides picks one through 14 and the chances are below for each teams odds to receive the number one selection in the 2015 NBA Draft.
