2024 College Basketball News, Rumors and Hot Stories

"The dust has settled from the most loaded weekend schedule of the entire regular season, a stretch that featured four matchups involving two top-10 teams. There were nine losses this past week by teams ranked in the top 10 of last week's Power Rankings, including Wisconsin and Kentucky suffering two each. While the high-profile matchups led to plenty of movement, perhaps the biggest storyline coming out of the weekend was at the top of the rankings, where UConn and Purdue have put themselves in a tier of their own entering the final month of the regular season." - ESPN.com, Feb. 5

"UConn and Purdue are two of only three teams ranked in the top five in all five NCAA tournament metrics, with Houston as the other. UConn and Purdue are also the only two teams in the country with more than six Quadrant 1 wins -- both have eight. Purdue leads the nation in Quadrant 1 and 2 wins, with 15. UConn is second, with 11. Neither team has a loss outside of Quadrant 1." - ESPN.com, Feb. 5

"Jaden Akins sank seven 3-pointers and scored a career-high 23 points to help Michigan State coach Tom Izzo notch his 700th career victory with an 81-62 romp over Michigan on Tuesday night. "Seven hundred wins at the same school means a lot," Izzo said. Many former players, including Steve Smith and Mateen Cleaves, celebrated on the court after the game with Izzo." - ESPN.com, Jan. 31

"Purdue's Zach Edey, the reigning college basketball player of the year, wasn't overly excited about becoming just the sixth player in Big Ten Conference history to have 2,000 points and 1,000 rebounds." - AP, Jan. 28

"Antonio Reeves scored 27 points and No. 8 Kentucky beat Mississippi State 90-77 on Wednesday night for coach John Calipari's 400th victory with the Wildcats. Kentucky (13-3, 3-1 SEC) shot 62% in the second half and 56% overall to provide the milestone victory for the Hall of Famer, who became the third fastest active coach to achieve that with a program, in 516 contests. Bill Self reached 400 wins in 484 games with Kansas, and Mark Few hit 400 in 499 outings at Gonzaga." - ESPN.com, Jan. 17

"The Kansas Jayhawks have competed in 33 consecutive men's NCAA tournaments, and they may well be a No. 1 seed when they extend that streak to 34 two months from now. Not only is that the longest active tournament streak, but it is also the longest in tournament history. However, the second- and third-longest active streaks are very much in danger of coming to an end this spring, as neither Michigan State nor Gonzaga belongs in the projected field in its current state. Those are the two biggest top programs in danger of missing the dance." - BleacherReport.com, Jan. 17

"Al-Amir Dawes had 23 points and Kadary Richmond scored 21 to lead Seton Hall over No. 7 Marquette 78-75 on Saturday for the Pirates' third win this season over ranked teams. Seton Hall (10-5, 3-1 Big East) held off a late scare from a well-rested Marquette, which hadn't played since defeating Creighton 72-67 on Dec. 30." - ESPN.com, Jan. 6

"Once Miami started making shots, it kept making shots. Nijel Pack scored 20 of his 25 points in the second half in his return to the lineup after a two-week injury absence, Matthew Cleveland and Norchad Omier each added 23, and Miami beat No. 16 Clemson 95-82 on Wednesday night to improve to 9-0 at home this season." - AP, Jan. 3

"Baylor's basketball teams are playing in a new home along the banks of the Brazos River after 35 years under the golden dome of the Ferrell Center. The 18th-ranked Bears christened the brand-new Foster Pavilion with a 98-79 win over Cornell. The sixth-ranked women's team debuts Wednesday night against in-state rival and 23rd-ranked TCU in a matchup of undefeated Big 12 teams." - AP, Jan. 2

"Purdue sits atop the men's Associated Press Top 25 poll for the third straight week as it prepares to enter its Big Ten slate. The Boilermakers only had one game last week, cruising to an 80-53 victory over Eastern Kentucky. That was enough for them to again fend off Kansas for the No. 1 ranking." - BleacherReport.com, Jan. 1

2023 College Basketball News, Rumors and Hot Stories

"Freshman guard Kanaan Carlyle scored 25 points, Spencer Jones added 21 points on 8-for-9 shooting and Stanford surprised No. 4 Arizona 100-82 in a Pac-12 matchup Sunday. Andrej Stojakovic scored 16 points and center Maxime Raynaud had 12 points and seven rebounds for the Cardinal (6-6, 1-1), who made a school-record 16 3-pointers in the victory." - ESPN.com, Dec. 31

"Top-25 senior Zoom Diallo, one of the best point guards in the country, announced his commitment to Washington on Saturday, becoming the Huskies' highest-ranked recruit since 2019... A 6-foot-4 point guard who attends Prolific Prep (California), Diallo is ranked No. 25 overall in the ESPN 100 for the class of 2024 and is the No. 3 point guard in the country." - ESPN.com, Dec. 23

"Purdue's slide from No. 1 in the Associated Press Top 25 men's college basketball poll turned out to be brief. The Boilermakers headlined Monday's latest poll for the second time this season after beating former No. 1 Arizona over the weekend. The Wildcats had spent two weeks at No. 1 after Purdue's loss to Northwestern ended the Boilermakers' stint at the top after one week." - AP, Dec. 18

"It was hard not to flashback to Purdue's stunning NCAA tournament loss to Fairleigh Dickinson during Arizona's second-half run Saturday afternoon. All the signs were there. Zach Edey being the only one consistently getting clean shots, the role players turning the ball over, outside shots not falling. But after Fletcher Loyer's basket with 1:29 left pushed the Boilermakers' lead back to nine and essentially clinched the win, it became abundantly clear: This is a completely different Purdue team compared with last season. The No. 3 Boilermakers weathered Arizona's second-half surge en route to a 92-84 win, handing the top-ranked Wildcats their first loss of the season. It's Purdue's third victory over a No. 1 team in the Associated Press poll, with the last one also coming against a top-ranked Arizona team on Nov. 25, 2000." - ESPN.com, Dec. 16

"Arizona strengthened its place atop the Associated Press Top 25 men's college basketball poll Monday, setting up a showdown this weekend against Purdue, the former No. 1 team in the nation. The Wildcats earned all but one first-place vote from a panel of 63 voters, no doubt impressing them with their 98-73 win over the No. 23 Badgers. They picked up three more first-place votes as they topped the poll for the second straight week, while Kansas remained at No. 2 and Purdue -- which Arizona had supplanted at No. 1 -- moved up one spot to third after wins over Iowa and Alabama." - AP via ESPN.com, Dec. 11

"USC freshman Bronny James hit a transition 3-pointer, delivered a sensational chase-down block -- that looked very familiar -- and had a steal and a free throw late in regulation during his long-awaited collegiate debut after suffering cardiac arrest less than five months ago. Long Beach State, however, spoiled James' return to the court with an 84-79 upset over USC in overtime at the Galen Center on Sunday. James finished with 4 points, 3 rebounds, 2 assists, 2 steals and 1 block off the bench while playing on a minutes restriction (16 minutes)." - ESPN.com, Dec. 10

"Duke basketball got back in the win column with a win over Charlotte at home after a pair of losses on the road to Arkansas and Georgia Tech. The dominant 80-56 win was a much-needed confidence boost for the No. 22 Blue Devils as they look to close out non-conference play by building some momentum." - BleacherReport.com, Dec. 9

"USC freshman Bronny James participated in his first full contact practice Thursday, taking the next step toward potentially making his much-anticipated debut Sunday against Long Beach State." - ESPN.com, Dec. 7

"More than a month after his disorderly conduct arrest, Kansas State forward Nae'Qwan Tomlin has been dismissed from the team, Kansas State athletic director Gene Taylor announced in a statement on Wednesday. In late October, Kansas State head coach Jerome Tang announced that Tomlin, who averaged 10.4 PPG and started 36 games last season, had been suspended "for not living up to expectations we require of our players" after his arrest for "disorderly conduct; brawling or fighting" at a local sports bar." - ESPN.com, Dec. 6

"USC freshman Bronny James was a limited participant at practice on Monday and is awaiting clearance for full-contact practice. James, the eldest son of Los Angeles Lakers star LeBron James, was cleared by doctors to return to basketball last Thursday, just over four months after he suffered cardiac arrest at a summer workout." - ESPN.com, Dec. 5

"It took less than a month for men's college basketball to go completely haywire. Eight teams in the top 16 of the previous edition of the Power Rankings suffered losses this past week. Two of those squads, Duke and Villanova, lost twice. Included in that group was last week's Nos. 1, 3 and 4. How will all of that impact the rankings? Arizona moving up to No. 1 is the easy part. The Wildcats were No. 2 entering last week and cruised past Colgate in their lone game of the week. Not only are they still unbeaten, they also own a road win against Duke and a neutral-court victory over Michigan State. Both of those wins have lost some of their luster, but Arizona's résumé is still more impressive than those of most of the other unbeaten teams in the sport." - ESPN.com, Dec. 4

"TJ Long hit a catch-and-shoot 3-pointer at the buzzer to tie the game then completed a four-point play to give Vermont a stunning 66-65 win at home over Yale on Saturday night." - ESPN.com, Dec. 3

"Max Klesmit's blazing start put Wisconsin in position to beat Marquette for a third straight season. His teammates picked up the slack from there as the Badgers used their rebounding superiority to defeat the third-ranked Golden Eagles 75-64 on Saturday. Klesmit scored all 21 of his points in the first half and posted his highest point total since transferring from Wofford before the 2022-23 season." - AP, Dec. 2

"Charleston Southern men's basketball coach Barclay Radebaugh stepped down from his position amid his 19th season at the helm, the school said Thursday. In a statement, athletic director Jeff Barber said it was a mutual decision." - ESPN.com, Nov. 30

Nov. 29

"Trevon Brazile had 19 points and 11 rebounds, Khalif Battle scored 21 off the bench and Arkansas held on to beat No. 7 Duke 80-75 on Wednesday night. It was the first win for Arkansas over a ranked ACC team since 1995, according to ESPN Stats & Information research. (The Razorbacks won 75-68 vs. No. 4 North Carolina in the Final Four in 1995.)" - ESPN.com

Nov. 27

AP top 25: 1) Purdue, 2) Arizona, 3) Marquette, 4) UConn, 5) Kansas, 6) Houston, 7) Duke, 8) Miami, 9) Baylor, 10) Tennessee

"Purdue is back atop The Associated Press Top 25 men's college basketball poll, right where it spent so much of last season. The Boilermakers ascended to No. 1 on Monday after an impressive run through a loaded field at the Maui Invitational. They beat Gonzaga, Tennessee and Marquette -- three of the top 11 teams in the nation -- in consecutive days, and that was enough to earn 60 of 63 first-place votes from the national panel of Top 25 voters." - AP

"Led by a career-high 29 points from Donovan Clingan, No. 4 UConn cruised to an 84-64 win over New Hampshire on Monday -- setting an NCAA record in the process. The win marked the Huskies' 24th straight nonconference victory by double digits, breaking a tie with 2008-09 North Carolina." - ESPN.com

Nov. 26

"Vanderbilt has suspended Lee Dort after the forward was arrested Sunday on a charge of felony aggravated assault. "We are aware of the matter and have suspended student-athlete Lee Dort from the basketball team pending the outcomes of the university's and the legal system's processes," Vanderbilt spokesman Jacob Bell said in a university statement." - ESPN.com

Nov. 24

"Bronny James was on the court with his No. 23 Southern California teammates for pregame warmups Thursday for the second straight game, although he mostly watched from under the basket, did some rebounding and then took three shots from the corner." - AP

"Zach Edey posted a 28-point, 14-rebound effort en route to leading the No. 2 Purdue Boilermakers men's basketball team to a 78-75 win over the No. 4 Marquette Golden Eagles in the Allstate Maui Invitational Championship on Wednesday." - BleacherReport
