Spike Lee Interview

Spike Lee is probably the most famous New York Knicks fan in the world. Today, the team fired general manager Scott Layden and replaced him with NBA legend Isiah Thomas. InsideHoops.com met with Spike right after the media conference for an exclusive interview. Note that InsideHoops.com wishes Isiah Thomas and the Knicks all the future success in the world. With that said, we let Spike sound off and speak his true mind, the way we knew he wanted to.

InsideHoops.com: What's with the Knicks not having a penetrating point guard for what feels like a hundred years? The city has produced (Stephon) Marbury...

Spike Lee: Sebastian (Telfair)...

InsideHoops.com: Sebastian, Rod (Strickland)...

Spike Lee: Well, maybe we get Sebastian. I think that's the first thing Isiah's going to look at. He's a point guard, he's going to look at who runs the point, he's going to get that thing straightened out. Isiah's going to straighten that out, first of all.

InsideHoops.com: It's been a while.

Spike Lee: If there's anything New York produces in basketball, it's point guards. So if you don't have somebody here to run the point, and everybody knows that's what we do, if anything, it doesn't make sense to me.

InsideHoops.com: It's weird that you can go to Rucker Park and see penetrating point guards, but New York hasn't gotten around to getting points who can drive and create.

Spike Lee: Well... I'm not trying to speak disparingly about Charlie (Ward), (Howard) Eisley, Frank Williams, but, we gotta do something.

InsideHoops.com: Has it been hard to watch (the Knicks)?

Spike Lee: It's been dreadful. I took my daughter to the game Saturday night, we beat the, you know the Knicks the Hawks are terrible! I mean, we left early. I never leave early! Even though the Knicks won. It was crazy. And then tomorrow night's going to be exciting, tomorrow night (Latrell) Sprewell's coming back. It's going to be off the hook tomorrow night. And, can you imagine if he jammed it in Van Horn's tomorrow, (laughs) it'll blow the roof off the Garden. You know Sprewell's going to try to throw it down tomorrow. Easily. He's trying to score 50.

InsideHoops.com: He's gonna bring it.

Spike Lee: He's coming hard to the hole tomorrow. He's gonna try to dunk on Dikembe (Mutumbo).

InsideHoops.com: When Sprewell first came to the Knicks, he would attack the basket as if the basket attacked his family before the game. Anyway, he's gone.

Spike Lee: It's my understanding that you really can't blame (Scott) Layden for that trade. That was really more a Dolan-Sprewell personality-clash thing. And if you clash with the owner, you can't win.

InsideHoops.com: It's a losing situation.

Spike Lee: It's a losing situation. But the Knick fans are the one that lost that one, because he's not here.

InsideHoops.com: From a fan perspective, do you agree that if the team is going to lose, they might as well be fun in doing it?

Spike Lee: Yeah, but think about it, though. We have to be realistic. Lets go into rebuilding mode. Forget about making the playoffs - for what! I disagree with Mr. Dolan there, forget making the playoffs, lets rebuild.
