Bobcats trade Primoz Brezec and Walter Herrmann to Pistons for Nazr MohammedThe Charlotte Bobcats today acquired Nazr Mohammed from Detroit in exchange for Primoz Brezec and Walter Herrmann. In addition, the Bobcats have rescinded their D-League assignment for Jermareo Davidson. In a related move, the Pistons requested waivers on forward Ronald Dupree.

Mohammed has appeared in 21 games for the Pistons this season and averaged 3.3 points, 3.5 rebounds in 10.9 minutes.

The 6-10, 250-pound center has appeared in 538 career NBA games (244 starts) and averaged 6.8 points, 5.5 rebounds and 18.2 minutes, while shooting .482 from the field. His nine-year NBA career has included stints with Philadelphia, Atlanta, New York, San Antonio and Detroit.

“Nazr brings the type of big body, experience and athleticism that we been looking to add to our team,” Bobcats General Manager Rod Higgins said. “Having evaluated our roster from top to bottom, we felt it necessary to make this move and bring in a guy who could immediately help this franchise.”

Initially drafted by Utah in the first round (29th overall pick) of the 1998 NBA Draft, Mohammed’s draft rights were traded to Philadelphia. Mohammed played three seasons at the University of Kentucky and captured two NCAA Championships in 1996 and 1988.

Brezec was drafted 27th overall by Indiana in the 2000 NBA Draft and was acquired by Charlotte as an expansion selection on June 22, 2004. In 291 career games, he has averaged 8.1 points, 4.3 rebounds and 0.4 blocks in 20.2 minutes per game. He averaged 10.6 points and 5.5 rebounds in his first three seasons with Charlotte while shooting 50.4% from the field (918-1,821 FG). Brezec finished fourth in the NBA’s Most Improved Player Award voting in 2004-05, ranking 14th in the NBA in field goal percentage that season. At the 2006 FIBA World Championships, he played on the Slovenian National Team that included NBA players Beno Udrih, Bostjan Nachbar and Rasho Nesterovic.

Herrmann was not drafted by an NBA franchise and signed with Charlotte as a free agent on September 11, 2006. He played six seasons of professional basketball in his native Argentina and four seasons in Spain. Herrmann averaged 9.2 points and 2.9 rebounds in 48 games last season for the Bobcats, 12 as a starter. He was named to the NBA All-Rookie Second Team and was named Eastern Conference T-Mobile Rookie of the Month for games played in March. He scored in double figures in 17 of the last 18 games of the season, averaging 17.9 points per game on 58.2% shooting over that span. In 17 games with the Bobcats this season, Herrmann is averaging 4.0 points and 2.1 rebounds in 10.2 minutes per game.

“We are pleased to welcome Primoz and Walter to the Pistons organization and we feel they will help add depth to our front court positions,” said Pistons President of Basketball Operations Joe Dumars. “We appreciate hard work and professionalism that Nazr and Ronald both displayed during their time here in Detroit and we wish both of them well.”

Dupree, now waived by the Pistons, signed as a free agent with the Pistons on July 18, 2006. He played in one game off the bench this season, playing four minutes in Detroit’s win at Orlando (11/2). Dupree appeared in 19 games last season, averaging 1.3 points and 0.9 rebounds in 4.9 minutes per game.

InsideHoops.com editor says: First glance says this is a better deal for the Bobcats than the Pistons, who mostly just wanted to part ways with Nazr Mohammed's contract. He is due to make over $6 million per season for several more seasons -- so, he's overpaid -- while Brezec and Herrmann have very short deals that expire soon. As for actual playing ability, I'd rather have the Brezec and Herrmann package. They're good to have at the end of a bench. And Brezec can definitely play at least a little. I haven't seen much of Herrmann.
